Free Trials ON META QUEST
Meta had a big problem: new owners of Meta Quest headsets weren’t buying VR apps from the Meta Horizon Store. It’s understandable — after spending hundreds of dollars on a new device, having to pay extra for software can feel like a tough sell.
This created two huge issues. First, this obviously hurt the company’s bottom line. Second, this meant that users simply stopped using the headset very much at all (purchasing a VR app is the #1 action a user can take to ensure that they keep returning to the platform). Without it, “device drop-off” skyrockets.
From our audience of non-purchasers, we learned that the #1 concern was that they “wanted to experience an app before purchasing it.” Some games had dedicated downloadable demos to resolve this, but they are costly and high-effort for developers to individually publish.
To resolve this, I led content design and product strategy to develop a new solution: time-restricted free trials that developers could create with a single click.
When developers turned on “try before you buy” in their developer dashboard, it would automatically let users download a free trial version of their app — letting them try it out for up to 20 minutes to get a taste of it.
In 2022, we launched Quest free trials to immense enthusiasm from users and massive earnings for developers. Of the developers that participated, 80% experienced significant increases in sales — averaging 37%+ more purchases and 24%+ more revenue!
